A rare, early sculpture by Barry Flanagan, Untitled (carving no. 2/84) embodies Flanagan's approach that allowed materials to find their own sculptural form, whether stone, sand, rope, cloth or bronze.

After graduating from St. Martin's School of Art in 1966, Barry Flanagan swiftly received international critical acclaim for his intuitive and inventive use of materials, which linked him to the emergent art movements of the time, including Arte Povera, Land Art and Process Art, largely using lumps of quarried Hornton stone or marble for these works. He is mainly associated with his large outdoor cast bronze works, including the magnificent Large Left-Handed Drummer currently installed here at Roche Court Sculpture Park.
