The New Art Centre represents the Barbara Hepworth Estate and has worked closely with the family on a global exhibitions and sales programme for over two decades. Our joint aim is to increase public awareness of Hepworth's work and legacy.

The New Art Centre frequently exhibits Hepworth's work in our galleries and sculpture park, situated in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Hepworth's desire to bring the physicality and vitality of the landscape into her work makes the presentation of her sculpture in the park particularly poignant.

Lithographs

Barbara Hepworth
Three Forms Assembling, 1968-69
Lithograph on Japanese Paper
Framed: 75.5 x 60 cm / 29 ¾ x 23 ½ in.
Unframed: 65 x 50.4 cm / 27 ⅜ x 19 ⅞ in.

The Aegean Suite was started in St Ives in October 1970 and completed at the Curwen Studio in London in June 1971, and includes both Desert Forms and Sun & Water. The lithographs are printed on hand-made paper supplied by Barcham Green and each sheet bears the watermark BH. Each lithograph is signed by the artist and published in a total edition of 90 copies of which the ‘Home’ edition is number I – 60/60 and the overseas edition is number xi – 30/30.

This second series of lithographs represents a further progression in Barbara Hepworth’s graphic work. At the outset it was decided to explore in terms of lithography, ideas on which she was currently working in sculpture. Characteristically, she has been involved in the development of each print, drawing the various colour separations, later in the adjustment of the work on the plates and carefully selecting colour combinations during proofing. The use of overlays of transparent colour has held her attention throughout the work, particularly interesting is the way in which she has adapted new lithographic processes to interpret washes of colour in rich tonal variations.
